Widnes Household Waste Recycling Centre: Opening Hours, What Is Accepted and Van Permits

The Widnes tip is at Johnsons Lane, WA8 0SJ, run by Veolia on behalf of Halton Borough Council. It opens 8am to 8pm in summer and 8am to 6pm in winter, is free for Halton residents bringing household waste, and requires a pre-booked appointment for anyone arriving in a van or with a large trailer.
Opening Hours
Johnsons Lane runs on two seasonal timetables:
- Summer, 1 April to 30 September: 8am to 8pm
- Winter, 1 October to 31 March: 8am to 6pm
The site is open every day across both periods, closing only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Arriving close to closing time carries a risk. Where vehicles are queuing towards the end of the day, site staff will stop additional vehicles joining the queue and notify drivers who will not get in. Allowing a comfortable margin before the closing hour is the practical approach, particularly at weekends and during the spring garden clearance period.
Depositing waste outside opening hours is fly-tipping rather than a minor infraction. It carries fines and possible prosecution, and CCTV operates at the site.
Where It Is and How to Get There
The centre is on Johnsons Lane, Widnes, WA8 0SJ. It has vehicle access only.
There is no pedestrian access at Johnsons Lane. Anyone arriving on foot will be turned away. Cyclists, with or without a trailer, are admitted but must follow the same route as vehicles through the site and observe the Highway Code.
Halton residents also have access to the borough’s other centre at Picow Farm Road in Runcorn, which is useful when Johnsons Lane is busy.
Who Can Use It
The site is for Halton residents only, and proof of identity and address is required. Site attendants have discretion to check.
Commercial waste is not accepted at either of Halton’s sites. Attendants can refuse entry to anyone suspected of bringing trade waste, and vehicle details in those cases are passed to the council’s enforcement team for investigation. Businesses need a commercial waste contract instead.
Vans and Trailers: The Booking Rules
This is the detail that turns away the most people, and the rules are strict.
A booking is required for any van, whether owned or hired, and for any trailer between 2m and 3m in length. Residents who arrive without a booking are turned away.
How to Book
Bookings are made by calling Halton Council on 0303 333 4300, or by completing the online request form on the council’s household waste recycling centres page.
No same-day bookings are accepted. Telephone bookings must be made by 3.45pm on the day before the intended visit. For a visit on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, the booking must be made by 3.45pm on the preceding Friday.
Online requests need more lead time — allow at least two working days between the request and the intended visit.
How the Allowance Works
Two separate limits apply depending on what is being brought.
For bulky items, furniture and DIY waste brought in a van or with a large trailer, visits are limited to six in a 12-month period.
For general household waste and recyclable materials brought in a van or with a large trailer, visits are limited to one per week, at either Johnsons Lane or Picow Farm Road.
Once a booking is confirmed there is no specific time slot to keep. Residents can arrive at any point during opening hours on the allotted day, though a booking does not bypass the queue.
What the Site Accepts
Johnsons Lane takes a considerably wider range of materials than the kerbside bins, which is the main reason for a trip. Containers are laid out across the site for separated materials, and staff direct drivers on arrival.
The site handles the household materials a kerbside collection cannot, including furniture and bulky household items, garden waste, wood and timber, rubble and hardcore, scrap metal, electrical items and appliances, textiles, and the mixed plastics, cartons and foil excluded from the blue bin (the kerbside bin collections guide).
Because container arrangements change as markets and contracts change, Veolia publishes a current site layout map on the Johnsons Lane page. Checking it before loading the car saves sorting on site.
Paint and Hazardous Waste
Up to 10 paint tins can be deposited at any time, and Johnsons Lane is the only Halton site accepting them. Picow Farm Road does not.
Household cement-type asbestos requires special arrangements through an appointments system. Appointments are made by emailing hdl@halton.gov.uk or calling 0303 333 4300. It cannot simply be brought to site.
Sharps are handled separately from the recycling centre network. Halton accepts regulated yellow sharps boxes only, and enquiries go to hdl@halton.gov.uk.
Alternatives to a Trip
For bulky household items, Halton runs a bulky waste collection service that removes furniture and large items from the kerbside, which is worth considering where a household has no access to a suitable vehicle or has used its van allowance.
Reusable furniture, appliances and household goods in serviceable condition can often go to local reuse organisations and charities rather than the tip.
