Widnes Life

Privacy policy

What Widnes Life collects, why, and what you can do about it.

[This is a working draft, not legal advice. Because the site holds real subscriber email addresses carried over from the old site, have this checked by someone qualified before launch and fill in the gaps marked below.]

Who we are

Widnes Life is a local news site covering Widnes and Halton. For data protection purposes the data controller is [registered company name and address, and ICO registration number if you have one]. You can reach us at enquiries@widneslife.co.uk.

What we collect

If you subscribe to the newsletter

We store the email address you give us, and the date you gave it. We use it to send you the newsletter and nothing else. We do not sell it or pass it to anyone else. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes your address from our list.

This site holds email addresses collected before 2021 under a previous version of Widnes Life. [Decide before launch whether to email that list at all, or to ask people to opt in again. Re-consent is the safer route where the original consent cannot be evidenced.]

If you leave a comment

We store the name, email address and comment you submit, along with your IP address, which helps with spam filtering. Comments are moderated before they appear.

If you email us

We keep the correspondence so we can deal with what you have raised and refer back to it later.

When you simply read the site

Our web host keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and troubleshooting. [If you add analytics, advertising or embedded content such as YouTube or Facebook, list them here and say what they set — this section has to match what the site actually does on the day it launches.]

Legal basis

We rely on your consent for the newsletter, and on our legitimate interest in running and securing a news website for server logs and comment moderation. You can withdraw consent at any time.

How long we keep it

Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe. Comments are kept alongside the story they relate to. Server logs are kept for a short period and then discarded. [Set actual retention periods here.]

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to how we are using it. Email enquiries@widneslife.co.uk and we will respond within one month.

If you are not satisfied with our response you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes

If this policy changes we will update this page and change the date below.
