Swimming in Widnes: Kingsway Leisure Centre Pools, Lessons and Prices
Kingsway Leisure Centre has a 25-metre main pool and a teaching pool. Here are the 2026/27 swim prices, lesson costs and how the timetable works.
Kingsway Leisure Centre on Kingsway, Widnes, is the town’s main public pool, with a 25-metre main pool and a separate teaching pool. Casual adult swimming costs £6.00 from April 2026, junior swims £3.30, and a family ticket £13.50. Swimming lessons run on a monthly membership basis.
The Pools
Kingsway has two pools:
- Main pool: 25m by 17m, with depths from 1m to 1.8m
- Teaching pool: 15.4m by 8m, with depths from 0.4m to 0.9m
The shallower teaching pool is used for lessons and for younger or less confident swimmers, which keeps the main pool available for lane swimming and general sessions.
The centre also has a gym, sauna and steam room, squash courts, a sports hall and a fitness class programme, so a swim can be combined with other activities on one visit.
Swim Prices from 1 April 2026
Halton Borough Council sets leisure charges annually and publishes a full fees and charges schedule. The 2026/27 swimming prices are:
- Adult swim (Halton Leisure Centre, including steam and sauna): £6.00
- Adult swim (Brookvale Recreation Centre): £5.50
- Junior: £3.30
- Under 8s: £1.05
- Family swim (2 adults and 2 juniors): £13.50
- Halton Leisure Card holder swim: £4.00
- Aquababes: £6.70
These are the borough-wide rates across Active Halton’s centres. Some lines in the schedule are specific to named sites, so confirm the rate for Kingsway when booking.
The Halton Leisure Card
The Halton Leisure Card costs £5.20 for 2026/27 and reduces the casual swim rate to £4.00 from the standard £6.00. For anyone swimming even a couple of times a month, the card covers its cost quickly. It also reduces rates on other activities and gives access to discounted Bronze membership.
Memberships
Regular swimmers may find a membership cheaper than paying per visit. The 2026/27 monthly rates are:
- Gold: £35.00 per month, or £385.00 annually
- Silver: £25.00 per month, or £275.00 annually
- Bronze: £22.00 per month, or £242.00 annually
- Teen: £21.00 per month, or £231.00 annually
- Family (2 adults, 2 children): £70.00 per month, or £770.00 annually
- Family (1 adult, 3 children): £56.00 per month, or £616.00 annually
- Day pass: £10.00
Reduced family rates apply to Halton Leisure Card holders — £46.00 per month for two adults and two children, and £36.00 for one adult and three children. Memberships cover access across Active Halton’s centres, and the tiers differ in what they include, so check which one covers swimming, gym and the health suite before committing.
Paying annually rather than monthly gives roughly eleven months for the price of twelve across most tiers.
Swimming Lessons
Children’s lessons at Active Halton follow the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme and are charged as a monthly membership rather than by the block:
- Child swimming lesson, 30 minutes: £30.00 per month
- Child swimming lesson, 60 minutes: £38.50 per month
- Certificate and badge: £3.00
Adults are catered for too. A block of 12 adult swimming lessons costs £90.00 for 2026/27.
Private tuition is available at £23.00 for a one-to-one lesson and £29.00 for two pupils to one instructor.
Crash courses concentrate lessons into consecutive days, which suits school holidays. A five-day, 30-minute crash course costs £35.00, and a four-day course £26.25.
Lesson places are allocated by ability stage and waiting lists are common at popular times, so contact the centre early rather than assuming a place will be available.
Timetables and Session Types
Swim timetables are published on the Active Halton website and change with school terms, holidays and lesson programmes. The pool runs a mix of session types through the week, including lane swimming, general public swimming, family sessions and lessons.
One operational detail is worth knowing before setting out. At busy times the pool runs on a band system once maximum capacity is reached, with 45-minute sessions in place to accommodate more customers. A swim at peak time may therefore be time-limited rather than open-ended.
Checking the current swim timetable on the day avoids arriving during a session closed to general swimming.
Opening Hours, Location and Contact
Kingsway Leisure Centre is on Kingsway, Widnes, WA8 7QH.
Active Halton publishes opening hours on the centre’s own page. The pattern varies by day, with earlier closing at weekends than on weekdays, and holiday periods differ again. Because the centre updates these directly, the site is the place to confirm before a visit.
The centre can be reached on 0151 511 1000.
Kingsway is close to the town centre and within walking distance of Victoria Park, where Widnes parkrun takes place on Saturday mornings (everything you need for your first Widnes parkrun).
What to Bring
Lockers are provided in the changing areas, and swimmers should bring a padlock or a coin depending on the locker type in use. Confirming which applies with reception on a first visit avoids being caught out.
Standard pool rules apply across Active Halton sites. Outdoor shoes are not permitted on poolside, and swimmers are asked to shower before entering the water. Photography and filming are restricted in changing areas and around the pool, and permission should be sought from staff before taking any pictures.
Children under 8 must be accompanied in the water by an adult, and ratios apply to how many young children one adult can supervise. The precise ratio depends on the children’s ages and swimming ability, so anyone bringing a group should check with the centre in advance rather than arriving and being turned back.
Armbands and floats are generally available, though bringing your own is more reliable at busy times.
Other Swimming in the Borough
Active Halton operates other sites across the borough, including Halton Leisure Centre and Brookvale Recreation Centre in Runcorn. Brookvale carries a lower adult swim rate at £5.50. Memberships covering all three centres give Widnes residents the option of using whichever site suits a given day.
Prices and Timetables Change
Leisure charges are reviewed annually and take effect from 1 April, and swim timetables change with school terms. The figures here are taken from Halton Borough Council’s published fees and charges schedule for 2026/27. Confirm current prices, opening hours and session times on the Active Halton website or with the centre before travelling.
